Rental affordability has hit a new low in Australia, with domestic tenants now spending an average of 33.4 per cent of their pre‑tax income on rent, according to property data firm Cotality.

Cotality head of research Tim Lawless says financial conditions for renters are unlikely to ease without a sustained lift in housing supply.
